2016
For our second walk in San Diego, we had a much smaller (but just as mighty) team of walkers. It was a chilly but beautiful day, and we had a lot of fun walking at De Anza Cove Park. Ben even did a portion of the walk alongside his CF nurse, Lisa. Lisa is a bit of a superhero for our family, as she coordinates *everything* involving Ben's care: CF clinic appointments, labs, prescriptions, insurance and navigating the military healthcare system, and so much more! He was thrilled to see her there showing her support for Ben and her other patients. It meant a lot to us as well.
2015
This was our first year in San Diego, and what an event it was! Our first surprise was having over 30 team members register to walk with us. We have been in SD less than a year and really didn't expect anything close to that. Our second surprise was that I (Steph) got asked to speak--on stage--with a microphone--in front of hundreds of people. Aaaand, our third surprise was the *rain*. The rain canceled the program, so I was off the hook, but it stopped right before the walk was supposed to start. The walk route was right by the water, and it was such a blast. The most amazing moment of the day? Meeting Brian from Vertex Pharmaceuticals, one of the researchers whose life's work has been to save my child's life. I wasn't expecting to react the way I did, but it was such an incredible moment for me. He asked about Benny's genotype and offered us a tour of the facility one day--something we will definitely be taking him up on sometime.
